Карьера Paul Oakenfold-а началась с клуба, представляющего собой полуподвальное помещение в саду женского монастыря. Там с годами оттачивалось его профессиональное мастерство. В середине 70-х Paul уезжает в Нью-Йорк (на тот момент сердце танцкультуры), где проводит немногим более года, перенимая опыт у легендарного диско диджея Ларри Левана и регулярно посещая культовый клуб Paradise Garage. Затем возвращается на родину, в Лондон, где пишет о хип-хоп культуре, сотрудничает с такими звездами как Prince, Will Smith, делает ремиксы для U2, Smashing Pumpkins.
В 1987 Paul Oakenfold провел несколько месяцев на Ибице в Испании, где влюбился в клубную музыку.
