103. (5x1) Runaway Train. 21 сентября 1996.
Michaela has ambivalent feelings upon returning to work to find that Katie's demands on her time are in conflict with the needs of her patients, and that Loren prefers to see the overconfident Dr. Cook for his prostate. Townspeople try to help Horace deal with Myra's desertion. Sully goes to Denver to negotiate with Gen. Wooden and gives his promise to no longer be an advocate for the Indians in return for Wooden allowing Cloud Dancing to return to Palmer Creek. On the train back to Colorado Springs, Sully attempts to stop a gang of train robbers who have diverted the train to a side spur. Sully is unable to stop the runaway train and it goes off the tracks. When word reaches town, Michaela moves into immediate action. The town immediately backs her up and they all rush out to the scene of the accident. Michaela frantically pans the group of injured, seeking for any sign of her husband. When she sees him, she runs to him in relief. With that fear assuaged, she turns her attentions to the people who need her help. Dr. Cook, unaccustomed to working in these conditions is forced to bow to Michaela's expertise and knowledge. In the aftermath, both Michaela's confidence in herself and the town's confidence in her is renewed.

104. (5x2) Having It All. 28 сентября 1996.
With all of the demands of being new parents Michaela and Sully find it hard to have the time and mood for romance. Sully feels neglected with Michaela spending so much time with their daughter, even brushing off his romantic overtures to answer Katie's cries. He confides this to Dorothy, and she advises Sully to court Michaela, just like he did to win her in the beginning. Thinking it wouldn't work, he hesitates, but decides it's better than nothing. After exposing Katie to Chicken Pox, Dr. Mike needs a better place to take care of her while working, so Sully suggests she turn one of the recovery rooms into a nursery for their daughter. Worried about the exposure her daughter will receive being around the clinic, she considers turning over her practice to Andrew, and decides to cut back on her hours, but it's a surprising visitor to the Homestead who convinces her to return. Colleen, seeing her mother's strain over managing everything expresses concern over leaving. Michaela assures her she'll be fine and encourages her daughter to pursue her future. The family bids farewell to Colleen, amidst tears. In the end, Michaela and Sully finally find time for enthusiasm, with Michaela assuring her husband that Katie understands her parent's need to be left alone.

105. (5x3) Malpractice. 5 октября 1996.
Mr. Norris, a lawyer, wins a suit for malpractice against Dr. Quinn when his baby dies while under her care. Michaela finds that she not only must come up with $2000 in restitution, but that she also comes under an injunction forbidding her to practice medicine. When another baby comes down with the same symptoms, Dr. Mike realizes she must defy the law and treat the child, and is thus provided with the vital clue in solving the mystery of the Norris baby's death.

106. (5x4) All That Glitters... 12 октября 1996.
Gilda, who has a life-threatening throat ailment she is keeping secret, arrives when Colleen is having doubts about college after finding it difficult fitting in. Colleen decides it might be better to give up her dream of being a doctor and become Gilda's traveling companion instead. Meanwhile, when Gilda's manager, Max, tries to hire Sully to help him kill a bear, Sully and Cloud Dancing look for a way to instill in the city slicker a love of wild animals. Also, Jake tries to use his privileges as mayor to get close to the famous singer, and Emma finally gains acceptance from the town's women when Gilda asks her to make a concert dress.

107. (5x5) Los Americanos. 19 октября 1996
Michaela is reminded of the fragility of life and is thus anxious to find godparents for Katie when Guillermo Morales, a new neighbor, is killed by a mountain lion. She persuades the town council to hire Guillermo's widow, Teresa, as the new schoolteacher and tries to befriend her, so the Reverend can return to tending the spiritual needs of the town. Grace wants to adopt Anthony, legally, but Robert E. is afraid the adoption may reveal things about his past that he would rather keep hidden.

108. (5x6) Last Dance. 26 октября 1996.
When Sully is offered a job helping to survey the new National Park at Yellowstone, Wyo., Dr. Mike is faced with the prospect of leaving her practice and all their friends and moving into the wilderness. With Sully no longer acting as the local Indian agent and banned from the Indian reservation, Dr. Mike realizes that it is important for him to have meaningful work. Leaving everything and everyone she knows and taking their new baby into the wilderness, however, is a daunting prospect for her. Meanwhile, as Matthew and Emma think about marriage, Emma gets a job offer from Gilda St. Clair. Brian agonizes about his first date at the Sweethearts' Dance, and Dorothy teaches Cloud Dancing some ball-room dances while he provides her with background on Indian customs for a book she is writing. Becky and Colleen find they both like Andrew. Sully kidnaps Michaela for a romantic night in the wilderness and lovemaking under a waterfall.

109. (5x7) Right or Wrong. 2 ноября 1996.
Jake is ahead of Preston in the Colorado Springs mayoral race after Dr. Mike gives him her endorsement at the debate. Sully risks being charged with treason for helping Strong River, a Pueblo Indian, escape after being unjustly imprisoned by the army. But it is Dr. Mike, who at first opposes the plan, who lands in jail when Jake turns her in for treating Strong River's gunshot wound.

110. (5x8) Remember Me. 9 ноября 1996.
A lonely old prospector suffering from a weak heart and senile dementia wanders into town with a gold nugget the size of a fist. While under the care of Dr. Mike he reveals that he is Lucius Slicker who is the father who abandoned Jake and whose neglect of his other children lead to their deaths. Mike tries to intervene and help Jake but it is Brian, who realizes his own need to deal with his feelings for his biological father, that helps Jake the most. Meanwhile, Horace abandons his ethics when he attempts to jump Lucius claim, hoping that if he became rich Myra would return to him.

The prospector, Lucius, is played by veteran stage and screen actor Ray Walston who won an Emmy Award as Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series in 1995 for his regular role as Judge Henry Bone on "Picket Fences," on the Network.

111. (5x9) Legend. 16 ноября 1996
Matthew is shot by bank robbers when he notices a suspicious looking man inside the bank and goes in unarmed to investigate. Even though Dr. Mike tells him he must rest, he runs off after U.S. Marshall Elias Birch (guest star Willie Nelson) in an attempt to prove that he is man enough to be sheriff. As Dr. Mike and Sully try to stop the bloodshed, Preston and Hank also stalk the robbers, with Hank envisioning the reward money going toward the new hotel. Meanwhile, widowed school teacher Teresa Morales struggles to maintain repairs on her ranch, but is too proud to accept Jake's offer of help -- until Brian steps in.

112. (5x10) The Tempest. 23 ноября 1996.
As storm clouds begin to gather, Dr. Mike is trying her limited culinary skills in an attempt to create a traditional Thanksgiving meal -- while a somewhat dubious Sully and Brian watch her efforts. But the joy of the holiday is threatened by more than bad weather when she learns that Andrew is opening a rival medical clinic and, worse yet, neither Matthew nor Colleen may be able to get home for Thanksgiving. Meanwhile, Preston Lodge III is finding that it isn't easy impressing his visiting father, the very formidable Preston Lodge II, who is in town for the new hotel opening. As the full fury of the storm hits and Dr. Mike fights to save herself and her baby, the entire town learns the real meaning of Thanksgiving.

113. (5x11) Separate But Equal. 7 декабря 1996.
Grace and Robert E applied for a grant to open a Freedman's School, but when the books arrive, Teresa refuses to teach there, and so Grace volunteers to teach until an instructor can be found. She soon realizes that Anthony is far ahead of her other students and if he is to continue his education he must attend the town school. But, Grace's and Robert E's attempts to enroll Anthony are met with violent opposition. Preston loses Grace as an employee, after making his hotel "white only" because of objections to blacks from a white patron who is being lead on by Jake and Hank.

114. (5x12) A Place to Die. 14 декабря 1996.
Three people Dr. Mike treats one morning become violently ill. Two of them die. Then the woman who washes the sheets for the clinic dies with the same symptoms. Even with Dr. Cook's, Colleen's, and Sully's help, Dr. Mike can't track down the cause of the infection. Cloud Dancing tells her she must do the same thing she did for the typhus infection in the Cheyenne village: burn everything. What will it do to Dr. Mike to burn her precious possessions in the clinic? Meanwhile, the attraction between Colleen and Andrew grows while she is home from college for a visit.

115. (5x13) Season of Miracles. 21 декабря 1996.
Brian suffers a crisis of faith when the Rev. Johnson is suddenly stricken with progressive blindness at Christmas time, and Dr. Mike can't help him. The townspeople are saddened by the Rev. Johnson's affliction, but Brian sees the malady as God's way of punishing the clergyman. The Reverend Johnson's faith is also tested and he decides not to lead the Christmas Eve service. Meanwhile, Dr. Mike consults with Cloud Dancing about the situation, and it's he who finds the words for Dr. Mike to explain to Brian and the Rev. Johnson that they should not consider the blindness a punishment from God, but instead a message that the preacher is to take a new path.

116. (5x14) The Dam. 11 января 1997.
When Sully opposes the construction of a nearby dam, he finds himself on the other side of the law and behind bars. Sully joins forces with Preston to try and peacefully stop the dam construction which will mean the end of hundreds of acres of countryside. But when Sully hears that the men Preston's hired to hijack a shipment of dynamite are determined to kill any witnesses, Sully rides with them in order to prevent the murders. However, when witnesses attest to the fact that Sully was riding with the hijackers, Matthew is forced to arrest him and Sully must go to court where Judge Webster finds him guilty and throws him in jail, creating discord in the family.

On a visit to Colorado Springs, Dr. Mike's revered Uncle Theodore (Teddy) shocks her and Sully by criticizing their parenting skills with regard to Brian and offering to take Brian back with him to Boston. Brian considers leaving his family when Teddy recognizes the boy's musical talent and tempts him with dreams of success in Boston. Actually, Teddy dislikes what he considers to be the "liberal attitudes" of Sully and Dr. Mike that he feels put Brian in danger. When Brian is injured while on the trail with Sully, Teddy can no longer hide his feelings, and Dr. Mike realizes that her uncle is attempting to replace his own lost son with Brian.

118. (5x16) The Most Fatal Disease. 1 февраля 1997.
Dr. Mike sees that the marriage of Kid Cole and Sister Ruth is unraveling and the couple is heading for divorce for no apparent reason. When Cole and his wife stop to see Dr. Mike while escorting mail-order brides to San Francisco, Dr. Mike immediately feels the tension in the air between them. She then learns that Cole is terminally ill and, in an attempt to spare Ruth the agony of watching him die, has created problems in their relationship so Ruth won't feel obligated to care for him. Ruth, meanwhile, is devastated at her husband's behavior and talk of divorce and seeks Dr. Mike's advice. Loren pays for an introduction to Rose.

119. (5x17) Colleen's Paper. 8 февраля 1997.
When Colleen, who is working on a college paper, asks Dr. Mike to recall her most memorable case, Dr. Mike looks back on the five turbulent years she's lived and loved in Colorado Springs. As they sit with Andrew, who is mysteriously ill at the clinic, Dr. Mike reminisces about her tumultuous career -- its successes and its failures -- and realizes how many divergent cases she as seen and treated.
When Andrew's condition takes a turn for the worse, Dr. Mike warns Colleen about the fine line between emotional involvement and professional detachment, an issue with which she has long struggled in the frontier town that's now her home.

120-121. (5x18 и 5x19) Between Friends/A House Divided: Part 1 and Part 2. 15 февраля 1997.
Sully's closest friend, Daniel Simon, falls in love with Dr. Mike when he comes to Colorado Springs for a visit. Sully and Dr. Mike are going through a bad time struggling to scrape up enough money to make the month's bank payment on their loan when Daniel arrives in town for a long overdue visit. While Sully is away for a few days doing odd jobs trying to raise some cash, Preston arrives on behalf of the bank to reposses the homestead for non-payment of the load. Daniel, now a wealthy man thanks to a recent gold strike, overrides Dr. Mike's objections and steps in and pays off the entire loan. Upon hearing how Daniel interfered in his business, the proud Sully becomes furious at his best friend. Then Sully realizes that Daniel has fallen in love with Dr. Mike, which takes her by surprise and further strains relationships all around. This also causes him to pay even more attention to Michaela. When a situation leads to Sully leaving, Dr. Mike wonders why she didn't notice the problems sooner.

122. (5x20) Hostage. 22 февраля 1997.
Dr. Mike, Brian and Katie are taken hostage at the homestead by bank robbers, one of whom is wounded. In spite of his injury, Sully, with the help of Wolf, Cloud Dancing and the men-folk in town, plots a rescue attempt. Meanwhile, inside the house with the two desperate robbers, Dr. Mike and Brian do some quick thinking and - with the help of some chloroform - distract the men while they scramble to come up with an escape scheme of their own.

Dr. Mike and the townspeople excitedly welcome the famous writer and poet Walt Whitman to Colorado Springs until rumors about his personal life begin to circulate. When Dr. Cook brings to light the rumor about Whitman preferring the company of men, Preston, who is playing host to Whitman, abruptly cancels the poet's reading, the townspeople shun him, and even Dr. Mike finds herself acting with suspicion when she learns that Whitman has taken Brian under his journalistic wing. Brian befriends him and does a series of interviews for the Gazette. Dr. Mike encourages Whitman to send for his "comrade", knowing that it's the only thing that will bring happiness back into his life.

124. (5x22) Before the Dawn. 12 апреля 1997.
Dr. Mike and the rest of the townsfolk are stunned when Horace attempts suicide after receiving the official divorce document from Myra. In an attempt to bring Horace out of his depressed state, Dr. Mike sends for Horace's estranged wife, Myra and their young daughter, Samantha, in the hopes that they will be the antidote to his melancholy. But her "cure" does more damage than good when Horace, realizing that having Myra back is not the antidote for his despair, feels worse than he did before. It takes another important person in Horace's life to help give him a reason to live.

125. (5x23) Starting Over. 26 апреля 1997.
When Dr. Mike's once-prim sister, Marjorie, arrives in town, she is in the throws of a divorce and Mike sees that she's become a very independent, liberated woman. Marjorie's cosmopolitan ways are initially intriguing to the open-minded Dr. Mike, but when Marjorie's relationship with Loren Bray escalates at an amazing pace, Mike begins to question Marjorie's character. She is scandalized by the new liberated lifestyle her sister has adopted as a devotee of the women's suffrage movement. Teresa has some misgivings about Marjorie's flamboyance. Michaela realizes that her sister is much better off being who she is now, than who she used to be, no matter how hard it is for her to accept this new sister Marjorie has become.

126. (5x24) His Father's Son. 3 мая 1997.
Feeling neglected, Brian acts out in adolescent fashion and skips school to hop a train to purchase a present for his Ma. When Brian's free-wheeling, irresponsible adolescent behavior puts him in mortal danger, and Sully disciplines him. As Brian's stepfather, Sully has let Michaela set the rules for Brian up to now. But when Brian's misbehavior with his friend Anthony puts them, and the town, in danger, Michaela and Sully realize that Brian needs -- and wants - Sully to act as Brian's real father and give the boy the boundaries he needs, which enhances and strengthens their bond. Meanwhile, Colleen feels that Andrew appears to be selling out his ethics while selling a cure-all remedy for the resort clinic.

127-128. (5x25 и 5x26) Moment of Truth: Part 1 (10 мая 1997) and Part 2 (17 мая 1997).
Sully becomes a wanted man when he defies a government order banning him from the Cheyenne reservation and organizes an escape for Cloud Dancing, which turns deadly. The savage beating of Cloud Dancing at the hands of a brutal cavalryman makes Sully realize that life on the reservation for his friend and the Cheyenne is no longer tolerable. Even Michaela realizes that drastic measures must be taken. But Sully's intercession has deadly repercussions. During the escape, long-repressed dog soldiers go wild, exacting revenge against the Army and local families, and the result is a massacre for which Sgt. McKay holds Sully responsible. Now with a price on his head, Sully convinces Michaela that it's safer for the family if he disappears for awhile, and so they say a tearful goodbye.

Sully and Cloud Dancing seek refuge from the Army in the canyons, while the actions of the renegade dog soldiers take their toll on the town. But when Sully and Cloud Dancing spot soldiers closing in on them, Sully insists on distracting the riders, giving Cloud Dancing the opportunity to escape. As Sully draws the soldiers away from Cloud Dancing, he finds himself trapped on a ledge by Sgt. O'Connor, who has wanted to kill Sully since the last time they fought, just before Katie was born. While they begin a ferocious hand-to-hand battle, Michaela and Sgt. McKay, who have been trying to find Sully before O'Connor does, reach the ledge, and Michaela discovers that they are too late. Shocking evidence leaves Michaela wondering whether or not her husband is alive.
